About Fort George
Built after the Battle of Culloden to secure Hanoverian control of the Highlands, Fort George is one of the most formidable artillery forts in Europe. Visitors can walk along its huge ramparts, peer into barrack rooms and powder magazines, and explore the Highlanders' Museum, which tells the story of Highland regiments through uniforms, weapons and personal stories. The fort's position on a headland over the Moray Firth also makes it a surprisingly good wildlife-watching spot, with regular bottlenose dolphin sightings in the channel below. Allow at least half a day to wander the site.
