About Culag Woods
### About Culag Woods
Nestled on the southern edge of Lochinver in the breathtaking Assynt region, Culag Woods offers a tranquil escape into the heart of the Scottish Highlands. This 36-hectare mixed woodland, lovingly managed by the Culag Community Woodland Trust since 1995, is a haven of natural beauty, local heritage, and community spirit.
Visitors will find themselves immersed in a tapestry of towering conifers and graceful native broadleaf trees, including ancient oaks, shimmering rowans, and delicate willows. Meandering paths weave through the woods, inviting exploration and leading to hidden sculptures, scenic viewpoints, and quiet corners perfect for reflection. Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply seeking a peaceful stroll, the trail network caters to all abilities and is accessible year-round.
Culag Woods is also home to a remarkable heronry, where grey herons nest and thrive during the breeding season—a spectacle celebrated with live broadcasts at the Assynt Visitor Centre. Beyond its wildlife, the woods are imbued with history, originally planted by the Duke of Sutherland in 1847, and now cherished by the local community for its role in sheltering the village and enriching daily life.
Entry to Culag Woods is free, and its gates are always open to welcome you. Here, amidst the wild beauty of Assynt, visitors can reconnect with nature, discover local biodiversity, and experience the Highlands at their most serene.
