Clava Cairns

About Clava Cairns

Clava Cairns is one of the most evocative prehistoric sites in the Highlands, a cluster of Bronze Age passage graves, ring cairns and stone circles dating to around 2000 BCE. Tucked away in quiet woodland close to Culloden Battlefield, the site has an almost otherworldly atmosphere, particularly at sunrise or sunset. You can wander freely among the moss-covered stones, examine the precise alignments of the cairns with the midwinter sun, and imagine the rituals that once took place here thousands of years ago. With no visitor centre or facilities on site, it feels pleasantly wild and is best visited as a short stop combined with nearby Culloden and Inverness.
