Whisky & Wildlife – 2-Day Cairngorms Break

The Journey

Speyside is the whisky capital of the world — the valley of the River Spey is home to over 50 distilleries producing some of the most celebrated single malts on earth. Combine this with the extraordinary wildlife of the Cairngorms National Park — the only free-ranging reindeer herd in Britain, red squirrels, ospreys, and red deer — and you have two days that are hard to beat.

This carefully planned route takes you through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Highlands. From ancient castles to hidden beaches, every mile offers something new. Prepared by our expert local guides, this itinerary ensures you hit all the must-see spots while leaving room for your own discoveries.

Trip Highlights

  • Glenfiddich and Macallan distillery visits
  • Speyside Cooperage barrel-making
  • Cairngorm Reindeer Centre hill trip
  • Highland Wildlife Park — wolves and lynx
  • Rothiemurchus red squirrel trail

Day by Day

Day 1: Speyside Whisky Trail

Drive into the heart of Speyside, based around Dufftown ("the town that whisky built"). Visit two or three distilleries: Glenfiddich (Dufftown — excellent modern visitor centre), Macallan (stunning new architecture, book ahead), Cardhu, or Aberlour (on the banks of the Spey, with a hands-on cask sampling experience). Visit Speyside Cooperage in Craigellachie where master coopers still make and repair casks the traditional way. Overnight in Craigellachie or Aviemore.

Day 2: Reindeer & Wildlife Experiences

Morning visit to the Cairngorm Reindeer Centre at Glenmore — the only free-ranging reindeer herd in Britain. Daily hill trips take you up to meet the herd in their natural highland habitat. Afternoon at the Highland Wildlife Park near Kingussie — a living collection of animals including wolves, lynx, capercaillie, and snow leopards. Alternatively, Rothiemurchus Estate offers guided red squirrel walks and osprey watching.
