Day by Day

Day 1: Edinburgh to Oban via Glencoe

Depart Edinburgh heading north across the Forth Road Bridge. Continue north through Stirling and into Perthshire before picking up the A82 along Loch Lomond — stop at Luss or the Inveruglas viewpoint for your first Highland loch view. Push through Rannoch Moor, one of the most remote stretches of road in Britain, and stop in Glencoe village for a short walk and lunch. Finish the day in Oban, the "Seafood Capital of Scotland", with time to explore the harbour and enjoy fresh langoustines on the pier.

Day 2: Mull & Iona

Rise early for the CalMac ferry from Oban to Craignure on the Isle of Mull. Drive the single-track road across Mull to Fionnphort — keep an eye out for white-tailed eagles en route. Take the short passenger ferry to the tiny island of Iona, home to one of Scotland's most important early Christian abbeys, founded by St Columba in 563 AD. Explore the abbey, wander the white-sand beaches and emerald-green machair, and enjoy the extraordinary peace of this holy island.

Day 3: Oban to Fort William via Castle Stalker

Head north from Oban along the A828 for a stop at the Castle Stalker viewpoint — one of Scotland's most photographed castles, perched on a tiny islet in Loch Laich. Continue to Ballachulish and into Glencoe for a walk in the valley — the Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail) trail is spectacular. Arrive in Fort William with time to explore the town and views of Ben Nevis.

Day 4: Road to the Isles: Glenfinnan, Morar & Mallaig

Take the magnificent Road to the Isles (A830) west from Fort William. First stop: Glenfinnan — walk across the famous viaduct viewpoint and visit the monument marking the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745. Continue through Lochailort and stop at the Silver Sands of Morar. End the drive at Mallaig, a working fishing harbour and ferry port.

Day 5: Return to Edinburgh via Trossachs

Head south through Rannoch Moor and down through Crianlarich and Tyndrum (coffee at the famous Green Welly Stop). Follow the A82 down the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, taking the Dukes Pass through the Trossachs National Park for viewpoints over Loch Ard and Loch Drunkie. Stop at Aberfoyle or Callander for lunch before the final drive back to Edinburgh.
