Day by Day

Day 1: Inverness to the Far North-East

Head east from Inverness through the Black Isle — stop at Chanonry Point for dolphins if the tide is right. Cross the Dornoch Firth and drive north via Golspie to Dunrobin Castle, the ancestral seat of the Earls of Sutherland with 189 rooms and French château-style architecture. Continue north to Helmsdale and turn off for the dramatic Whaligoe Steps, a 17th-century flagstone staircase of 365 steps carved into the cliffs. Overnight Wick or Thurso.

Day 2: John o' Groats & Duncansby Head to Durness

Start with the short drive to Duncansby Head — the actual most north-easterly point of mainland Britain — with spectacular views of the Duncansby Stacks. Visit John o' Groats for the obligatory signpost photo. Head west along the north coast via Castletown and Dunnet Head — the most northerly point of mainland Britain. Continue through Tongue to the overnight stop at Durness.

Day 3: Durness & Assynt

Morning at Smoo Cave — a remarkable sea cave accessible by boat in season — and Balnakeil Beach with its striking white sands. Head south along the A838 towards Lochinver, passing through some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland: the isolated mountains of Suilven, Canisp, and Quinag. Stop at Achmelvich Beach or Clachtoll Beach. Overnight in Lochinver.

Day 4: Assynt to Ullapool

Explore the Stac Pollaidh mountain (shorter circular walk, 2–3 hours) or take the longer Suilven walk. Visit the ruins of Ardvreck Castle on the shores of Loch Assynt. Drive south via the Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve. Arrive in Ullapool — a bustling fishing port with excellent seafood restaurants.

Day 5: Ullapool to Applecross via Torridon

Drive south before turning west into the Torridon landscape — the oldest mountains on earth at nearly 800 million years old. Loch Maree and Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve are worth a stop. Continue to the Bealach na Bà (Pass of the Cattle) — one of the most dramatic mountain roads in Britain, rising to 626m with hairpin bends. Descend into Applecross village.

Day 6: Applecross to Inverness via Eilean Donan

Take the coastal road north from Applecross through Shieldaig and Lochcarron. Detour via the picturesque village of Plockton — often called the "Jewel of the Highlands". Stop at Eilean Donan Castle for the perfect final Highland photo. Return to Inverness via the A87 and the Great Glen, or optionally via Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle.
