Drive south along the loch to Fort Augustus and the Caledonian Canal locks. Afternoon: drive to Glen Affric — rated one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland — for a lochside walk through ancient Caledonian pines. Return to Inverness for the evening.

Day 2: Far North & Flow Country
Drive north via Tain and the Dornoch Firth. Continue through Golspie and Helmsdale, turning inland on the A897 into the Strath of Kildonan — scene of Scotland's Gold Rush of 1869. You can still pan for gold at Baile an Or today. Head north to the Forsinard Flows National Nature Reserve — the heart of the Flow Country, the largest blanket bog in the world and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Continue to Dornoch — a charming cathedral town with a beautiful beach. Stop at Loch Fleet, a tidal basin and national nature reserve with great birdwatching. Return to Inverness via the Cromarty Firth.
