Day by Day

Day 1: Edinburgh to Pitlochry & Aviemore

Drive north via the A9 and stop in Dunkeld for a morning walk through the cathedral grounds. Continue to The Hermitage near Dunkeld — a short woodland walk to the spectacular Ossian's Hall viewpoint and Braan waterfalls. Lunch in Pitlochry, then visit Blair Athol or Edradour Distillery (one of Scotland's smallest) in the afternoon. Check into accommodation in Aviemore.

Day 2: Cairngorms National Park

Take the funicular railway up Cairn Gorm mountain for views across the plateau. Alternatively, walk from the ski car park towards the summit (allow 3–4 hours return). Afternoon at Loch an Eilein — a beautiful circular forest walk (5km) around an island castle in a Scots pine forest. Finish the day at Rothiemurchus Estate where activities include quad biking, falconry, gorge walking, and canoeing.

Day 3: Speyside Whisky Trail & Castles

Drive east into Speyside — home to more whisky distilleries than anywhere else in the world. Visit two or three distilleries from: Glenfiddich, Macallan, Cardhu, or Aberlour. Add Speyside Cooperage in Craigellachie for a fascinating look at barrel-making. Visit Ballindalloch Castle, still lived in by its original family. Overnight Grantown-on-Spey or Aviemore.

Day 4: Royal Deeside & Return

Head south-east to Royal Deeside — the route along the River Dee used by the Royal Family since Queen Victoria fell in love with Scotland in the 1840s. Stop at Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve for a short walk to Loch Kinord. Drive through Ballater to Balmoral Estate (open to visitors April–July). Return to Edinburgh via Glenshee or the A93.
